Bluefin Fish Fetches Unprecedented Sum of $3.2m at Japanese Capital New Year Sale
A massive bluefin tuna made headlines at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the market's inaugural auction of the new year.
The top offer for the 535-pound fish was submitted by the parent firm of a nationwide sushi restaurant group, which manages restaurants across the country and internationally.
"An inaugural tuna signals a prosperous start," commented the entrepreneur, a notable bidder at the annual January sale.
Dubbed the Tuna King, this industry figure is renowned for submitting record bids for premium bluefin tuna at these auspicious January auctions.
Bidding Shock and Historic Precedent
After the auction, the winner admitted to the press that he was "surprised at the amount," noting, "I believed we would be able to buy it a little cheaper, but the price skyrocketed in no time."
This most recent acquisition exceeds his own notable purchases:
- He secured a tuna for 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
- He bid 155 million yen in 2013.
- In 2019, he purchased a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1 million).
Despite once commenting that he thought he "overdid it," he has now proceeded to shatter his own record once again.
A Tradition of High Prices
The opening auction at the Tokyo fish market is traditionally associated with sky-high prices. The previous year, the first tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by another food company, which stated the fish would be served at its locations throughout the country.
The intense energy at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has evolved into a major spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.
Swift Service
The extremely valuable tuna was shortly thereafter prepared for customers at the entrepreneur's sushi restaurants soon after the auction concluded.
"I sense like I've started the year in a positive way after tasting something so lucky as the year begins," said one satisfied customer.
